What does it mean to be an equality partner?
According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, an associate is someone who “has joined with another for a general purpose.” A collaborator is someone who is not identified as someone who is a little-known, marginalized or disgruntled group – but wants to understand the issues that affect these communities and change their platforms to create change. A strong example of this was the Salesforce employee turnout on Martin Luther King Day. Our Black Employee Resource Group, Boldforce, formed a troop of people to walk the local march for the first time a year ago. One hundred people participated in that first voyage — in which most people were of color.
The second year, after promoting what it means to be a collaborator and encouraging everyone to join, over 1,100 people showed up for the march! And most of them were people who didn’t identify with the black word — in other words, allies. Boldforce members described a sense of pride and feeling supported, especially after feeling isolated as part of a small or isolated group. He is the power of the ally.
