As you continue through this module, you will notice a fantastic topic: Empathy. Equality begins with empathy. When we try to understand before listening we can greatly influence the culture. We can all try to be good people for each other by putting ourselves in each other’s shoes. Part of this is the practice of engaging listening as you start listening to more personal stories. Remember Intention vs. Effect
Amy Lazarus, CEO, and founder of Inclusive Ventures, always begin the discussion on equality by reminding everyone of intention vs. impact. In other words, most people have a positive intention; However, it is the effect of our actions and words that matters. Beginning Your Ally Journey
Think of a time when someone expresses that they were told something that makes them feel hurt or insulted. The immediate response by the person saying this is usually defensive. This is where we hear “I’m not racist/homophobic/sexist and so on.” Imagine instead that we replied, “I’m sorry, please tell me what I said/did wrong.” This helps us to have a brave and honest conversation from which we can learn. Prioritize Accountability and Forgiveness
You’ll also see this mentioned in other modules: Accountability and forgiveness go hand in hand when we’re having a difficult and powerful conversation. It is important that we take responsibility for our impact on others, not being as defensive as possible. It is also important that we forgive those around us for their mistakes and do the same for others as we want.
